I’m not sure if Himalayan Salt Lamps help with sundowning, but I think so.  Recently my loved one endured her fourth hip surgery.  Prior to this surgery she constantly had the evening “jitters” (a.k.a. sundowning).  The golf cart saw a lot of action as the motion satisfies a vestibular need.  When she came home from the hospital we had added a Himalayan Salt Lamp based on the recommendation of a friend.  And surprisingly, we haven’t had the jitters since.  Could it be the Salt Lamp?  I don’t know.  But I was convinced enough to buy two more, one for my room and one for their bedroom (the other one is by the TV).  Whatever the case, I’m not removing it to find out.  But I’m wondering if there are others who have LO’s who have trouble with sundowning would be willing to experiment?  It takes a few weeks to be effective.  But would love to hear.

UPDATE:  It’s been 7 months since I wrote this post.  And you know what?  That wretched sundowning is still gone.  I think part of it is the salt lamp but also the vitamin regimen we’re on.  That turned her health around more than anything I’ve ever seen or experienced before.  Even the medical staff are amazed.

How do Himalayan Salt Lamps Work?

1) Our computers, cell phones, tablets and TV’s all emit what is called “blue light.”  Blue light distributes positive ions which have been shown to have a negative effect on our body when exposed in excess.  With cell phones in our pockets and TV & computers for our jobs and entertainment, it happens all the time.

2)  Himalayan Salt Lamps produce the opposite effect by emitting negative ions.  The negative ions attach to the positive ions and neutralize their power.  The negative ions themselves have been scientifically proven to be beneficial to the body enhancing mood, blood-flow, rest and reducing anxiety (WebMD).

Whether they work for sundowning or not, I’m not sure.  But my loved and I are enjoying a vacation from the jitters.  I hope it’s an extended vacation.  It’s been almost 2 months now so it is looking hopeful.  Will you give it a try and let me know?

UPDATE:  Mom’s sundowning is gone.  Hallelujah!  I’m not sure if it was the salt lamp, the supplements or the hormone pills.  Or all together.  But it has gone from severe back to normal.  #nevergiveup
